Arman EMAMI - industrial designer

Since 2005, the Berlin based industrial designer Arman Emami and his team have looked at everyday commodities from a completely different angle and fully detached from any conventions to create state-of-the-art design objects, which are sensible and sensual at the same time. Linchpin, designation and motor of the in Berlin situated design agency is the inspirational as well as systematic search of balance and harmony within their work, which can be easily found when looking at the serial-produced items of the innovative designers.

In this context, pure forms and functions play a very important role: all technical details and aesthetics are connected discretely and friendly through one guiding line to continuously create new but familiar objects which enrich and simplify the lives of its users over and over again. In doing so, expectations, norms or standards are deliberately ignored to explicitly cross boundaries and to question best practices. Nevertheless, established values, concepts or developments are always considered as well. It is rather the combination of expert knowledge and curiosity that provides goal-orientated but never boring or ordinary products.

The superior aim of EMAMIDESIGN is to change or to fully reinvent objects to make them high quality, long-lasting and timeless. Furthermore, a sustainable and ecological serial production counts greatly, too. This holistic as well as economic and environmentally friendly approach stands in complete opposite to the predominant throw-away mentality of our time. It is rather based upon the assumption that true innovation is an essential driver of our economy and that it helps to confirm the reputation and status of being one of the innovative market leaders world-wide. Thus, it is carefully being taken into consideration, that all products are suitable for daily use and will always reach broad audiences. According to the innovative designers, only feasible and realistic ideas and concepts account for being and staying competitive internationally. The origin of the design philosophy of Arman Emami can be defined as simplicity and functionality. In this matter, he looks at forms, colors and haptic experiences the same way notes, sounds or sequences work – they provide compositions with an individual soul and character. This way, the staff at EMAMIDESIGN primarily concentrates on interesting, emotional and easy-to-use products and innovations that leave a significant and fascinating impression with the observer.

“Product design is more than rationality, functionality and technology. It is created upon instinct, idealism and the concern for the new and different. Good ideas are based upon the aesthetic embodiment of a to be solved problem via design: a poetry of shape forming, that is” Says Arman Emami

Emami design pro Freecom
The SQ line for Freecom was created in the style of metaorganic design*. It was important that different items make up a uniform product family that is autonomous and expandable as well as recognizable through specific design features so that the industrial design factor works as a main component of Freecom’s corporate identity. It was also important that the products appear to be timeless and overall uniform and balanced. This was achieved through consistent minimalist reduction to the basics in combination with a homogenous overall geometry whose components are in turn harmonically proportioned. All details were hereby created strictly according to a design grid that allows them to appear tidy and calm. Consciously doing away with gradations in material transitions, unnecessary grooves and dominant edges gives the overall product shape a pleasant surface feel. The restrained design of the product is a charismatic attention getter.
The sandblasted stainless steel surface makes the products less susceptible to fingerprints and scratches in everyday life. The combination of thin metal surface and lightweight plastic core creates a compound that is both very light and scratch-proof. The surrounding plastic trim works like a buffer and thus protects the products against any impact. In order to create a unique characteristic, the ventilation holes in product SQ 3,5” were for instance arranged in an unusually chaotic constellation with a nevertheless generally harmonious appearance. Despite the necessarily pragmatic design of electronic devices, the given freedom should be used for the "fun" factor that emphasizes the individuality of the design.

*Metaorganic design
Metaorganic design (derived from the Old Greek prefix metá for behind or beyond and "organic design") stands for an organic style that is oriented on functionality and reduction and used especially in industrial design. Metaorganic design combines two spheres: The sobriety and function of geometric design and the emotionality and sensual shape of organic design. Unlike the latter, the curves and archings of metaorganic design are somewhat more restrained and less striking. This gives the overall image more geometry and leaves more space for functionality. The goal of the drafts is a wonderful balance between the sensuality of the shape and the systematic reduction to the basics. The metaorganic design line was developed in 2006 by Arman Emami, founder of the Berlin design office Emamidesign.
